If you are suffering from especially chronic pancreatitis your doctor may recommend taking pancreatic enzymes. These enzymes are meant to replace the ones that your pancreas is no longer able to produce because of the damage caused by your pancreatitis.
My experience with these has for the most part been positive. I have had some problems though. When I first started taking the enzymes I made the mistake of taking the enzyme after I had eaten. After a bit my stomach started hurting almost as much as if I was having a pancreatic attack.
Another time I took an enzyme an hour before I ate and again my stomach started hurting.
But as long as I take an enzyme just before I eat and never after the enzyme seems to make the pain from my chronic pancreatitis less. It doesn’t seem to help with the occasional acute flareups that I have but it still helps.
So if your doctor suggests that you might need to start taking some of the enzymes it may be a good idea.
