Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water, or something like that, another study finds a link between a drug that is commonly prescribed and pancreatitis.
“Researchers from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have found that individuals treated with certain forms of cortisone appear to be at increased risk of acute pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis is the most common disease of the pancreas”
The authors of this study found a connection between use of oral cortisone and the development of acute pancreatitis within a few days of starting treatment. The study is apperently the first one to illustrating that there is a link between the use of cortisone and the risk of developing pancreatitis.
The study used data from more than 6,000 people who had been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and compared it with over 60,000 people who were non-users of cortisone.
The study concluded that users of oral cortisone had a 70% higher risk of developing acute pancreatitis than those that didn’t.
